The Watertown Family YMCA Swim Program develops competency in swimming, along with confidence and endurance. A child advances to the next level only when they can proficiently and safely perform the skills within their level. Class levels meet once a week for 6 weeks during each session.
Level 1a:Prerequisite-minium 3 years old, beginner swimmer. Goal- Basic water adjustment along with stroke proficiency in the paddle stoke (assisted).
Level 1b:Prerequisite– Beginner swimmer who is comfortable putting their face fully underwater. Goal-Basic water adjustment along with stroke proficiency in the paddle stroke (15+ feet unassisted).
Level 2:Prerequisite-Unassisted paddle stroke with YES breathing (15+ yards) Goal-Advanced & deep water adjustment along with stroke proficiency in the modified front crawl stroke with YES breathing and the modified back crawl.
Level 3: Prerequisite- Modified front crawl stroke with YES breathing (15 yards) and treading water. Goal-Deep water adjustment along with stroke proficiency in the front crawl with rhythmic breathing (15+ yards) and the back crawl (15+ yards).
Level 4:Prerequisite-Treading water (30 seconds), front crawl with rhythmic breathing (15+ yards), and back crawl (15+ yards) Goal-Deep water adjustment, open turns (front, back), along with stroke proficiency in the front crawl (25 yards: left side, right side, both sides), the back crawl (25 yards), the elementary backstroke (15 yards), and the sidestroke & breaststroke kicks.
Level 5:Prerequisite-Treading water (1 minute), front crawl (15 yards: breathing left, right, both sides), back crawl (15 yards, rest, 15 yards), elementary backstroke (15 yards). Goal-Advanced deep water adjustment, starts (front, back), flip turns (front, back) along with stroke proficiency in the front crawl (50 yards: left side, right side, both sides), the back crawl (50 yards), the elementary backstroke (25 yards), the breaststroke (25 yards), and the sidestroke (25 yards)
Level 6:Prerequisite-Treading water (3 minutes), ability to perform the front crawl, back crawl, elementary back-stroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Goal– proficiency in the butterfly stroke, advanced skill work in turns, starts, stroke mechanics/refinement and competitive theory, diving proficiency.
Level 6+:Prerequisite-Pass out of Level 6. Advanced Swimming, stroke and skill proficiency. Introduction to competitive swimming techniques.
Parent & Tot:Prerequisite– Minimum 6 months of age. Child and parent have the opportunity to swim together with an instructor’s guidance to help the child get acclimated to the water.
Adult Swimming: Are you an adult who is uneasy in the water? Or maybe you just want to know some basic swimming skills? Or are you training for a sporting event and need to learn a specific stroke? Adult swimming is the class for you!
